Artistic Research and site specific installation, Plauen, 2018
Situation Room

An advertisement on an online marketplace caught the attention of the artist collective Situation Room. Around 80 concrete panels from a GDR-era prefabricated apartment building were offered for sale in Plauen. With their historical patina, the individual modules evoke shifts in urban planning, social utopias, and collective memory. While their materiality invites reflection on the past, their continued storage suggests an appreciation of the material and opens up possibilities for imagining new promises and utopian visions. Situation Room’s artistic research culminated in bringing three sites into dialogue.

In the exhibition spaces of the Weisbach House, a room-within-a-room was constructed from OSB panels, reconstructing the floor plan of a prefabricated apartment building. At the storage site, a crane was used to suspend a scaffold of lamps above the stored concrete panels, staging them through a large-scale light installation. Parallel to the exhibition, large-format billboards in the Chrieschwitzer Hang housing estate displayed excerpts from media coverage of the demolition.
