DON’T BE A BARRACKS RAT
Art-in-Architecture-project, Nationaltheater Mannheim, 2023
Situation Room
The art-in-architecture project Don’t Be a Barracks Rat explores the history and transformation of Altes Kino Franklin, a temporary venue of the National Theatre Mannheim. Originally built as part of the former US military site Benjamin Franklin Village (BFV), the cinema was converted into a venue for drama and dance following the withdrawal of US troops.
The artistic concept addresses the transformation from military to civilian use. Military symbols and aesthetics are appropriated and transformed through changes in colour, form, and function. This is reflected, among other elements, in the lighting fixtures, whose shapes are derived from anti-tank barriers. The walls and parts of the furniture are covered with colourful camouflage patterns, applied selectively in some areas and extensively in others.
Camouflage thus loses its original function of concealment. Instead, its colourful presence creates an inviting and eye-catching environment that represents the theatre as an open, welcoming cultural space.
