NIQAB (LES TROIS)

Sculpture, 2016

The sculpture depicts three figures standing closely together, their arms wrapped around one another, forming a cohesive social unit. Their bodies are enclosed in a hardened, self-supporting textile shell whose form evokes a niqab. The figures remain anonymous, with their faces, bodies, and individual features largely concealed.

The work was created against the backdrop of European debates surrounding the niqab and burka, which became increasingly intertwined with questions of religion, gender, migration, national identity, and social belonging in the mid-2010s. Niqab (Les Trois) examines how such attributions arise and the role that images, media representations, and political discourse play in shaping them. The sculpture explores the tensions between visibility and concealment, self-identification and external attribution, as well as protection and exclusion. It also addresses racialised and gendered projections and questions how perceptions of otherness and threat are constructed.
