HALBMAST
Video, 2009
The video work Halbmast shows a slightly snow-covered vacant lot in the foreground, with the urban landscape visible in the distance. After a few seconds, the artist enters the frame and begins digging a hole in the ground. His digging appears amateurish, as do his subsequent attempts to assemble and erect a flagpole. The lowering of flags in mourning is usually a collective, state-administered gesture. In Bergelt's hands, it becomes a solitary, clumsy act, through which the solemnity of the state ceremony is disrupted and quietly ironized.
